Henri Matisse var 77 år i 1947, da han udgav Jazz, sin første bog med papirklip. Efter en operation var han sengeliggende og kunne ikke holde på en pensel. Derfor opfandt han en ny måde at male på: først gouachefarvede han papiret, klippede det med en saks og komponerede direkte på væggen. Værkerne vidner om denne sidste fornyelse.
De sidste syv arbejdsår bød på karrierens frieste værker: La Gerbe, Polynésie la Mer, Les Nus bleus, La Tristesse du roi (1952) og L’Escargot. Som 80-årig gentænkte Matisse maleriet uden maling, med en saks.
